AiChE Presentations November 13-18, 2022 at Phoenix Convention Center

Phoenix was recently host city to the 2022 annual meeting for The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AiChE). A key attraction of the week long meeting are scientific presentations by select teams of scientists who submit research papers and are selected to present their work at the conference.

This year, Slide-Lok and Mirabel Coatings were happy to host dinner for 4 young PhD researchers in town that were presenting their research at AiChE. One group from The Ohio State University’s college of engineering presented on use of magnetic fields to non-invasively detect blood anomalies and separate targeted (diseased) blood cells from healthy cells. An Arizona State University researcher presented on the use of palladium as a catalyst to improve efficiency of certain types of reactions. With AI in the news in recent years, of note was that the palladium research was being driven by AI assisted computational chemistry methodology exploring energy demands in complex reactions using Schrödinger’s wave equation analysis to investigate energy required to rip electrons away from certain orbits. Research is done via computer simulation to hone in on the most desired results that then get culled out for further examination, enabling vast amounts of research to be conducted in much shorter time frames.

Also sharing dinner with the group was Bill Schmitt. Bill is working on finishing a book that details his 5 decades of research into what drives young people into and away from careers in science and engineering. Bill is noteworthy for helping create COSI, the center of science and industry in Columbus, Ohio and a similar institution in Seattle, Washington. Bill’s career has pursued answers to what has quietly become one of our nation’s single largest national security issues, increasing the number of young persons entering science and engineering fields. Lastly, we were joined at dinner by a world class sailplane pilot, Bob Hurni, who can legitimately lay claim to having crashed more airplanes on more continents than most pilots alive and flying today. Bob is still active in the EAA, the experimental aircraft association and works with different programs to introduce young people to aviation.

We are always excited to share dinner with bright and inspiring minds, in the field we are most passionate about, science and exploration. Listening to these young researchers discuss their work was another timely reminder that the next generation is unbelievably smart and capable and will help solve some of the most complex problems facing society. We wish our science friends much success in their budding careers and thank them for taking the time to share dinner with us.
