Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic Garage Floor Coatings

Since polyaspartic coatings were introduced to the garage floor market there has always been a debate of epoxy vs polyaspartic. Both of these types of floor coatings are great as long as you keep in mind their intended application strengths and weaknesses. From speed of cure, returning your vehicles to the garage, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance (durability), UV (sunlight) resistance, and of course the difference in cost. Epoxy and polyaspartic are both excellent coatings depending on your budget and project requirements. Larger warehouses and mechanic shops might favor epoxy for its overall good performance at a lower price, they don't necessarily need the speed polyaspartic offers. Homeowners, on the other hand might determine the price difference for a standard home garage is marginal but the difference in returning vehicles to the garage is more important to them since they do not want their prized possessions sitting outside for a week.

The biggest advantage of choosing an epoxy garage floor coating vs polyaspartic coating is cost. Modern epoxy garage floor coatings have good chemical resistance and durability, the exception is application / cure speed and little to no UV protection (will yellow and amber with sunlight exposure). A typical epoxy floor requires 2-3 days to install and you cannot drive back onto the garage floor for 5 days after the last coat, meaning vehicles are displaced for the better part of 7 days.

Polyaspartic is the better option for most homeowners. Polyaspartic coating technology offers a true 1 day garage floor application, and you can drive your vehicles back on the floor 24 hours after the last coat was applied. Polyaspartic garage floors also offer excellent chemical resistance and 4x more abrasion resistance compared to epoxy. Two BIG drawbacks to epoxy are that it is less durable compared to polyaspartic, epoxies are generally more brittle and not elastic, and that all epoxies will yellow and amber in sunlight, regardless of the additives some manufacturers claim they use. Polyaspartic chemistry is aliphatic and will not amber or yellow compared to epoxies.
