Samuel Strayer Joins the ASCT Board of Directors

Samuel Strayer, Technical Director & Chemist of Slide-Lok / Mirabel Coatings, Inc., has joined the Board of Directors for the Arizona Society for Coatings Technology. The Arizona society is part of a larger collective known as the Western Coating Societies (WCS) which puts on the biennial Western Coatings Symposium and Show. The WCS dates back to the 1950's whose purpose was to bring a national coatings symposium to the West Coast to provide professionals in the paint and coatings industry technical education and networking opportunities that were otherwise only available in the Midwest and East Coast.

Samuel is a graduate of the Arizona State University, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, and has been a member and supporter of the WCS and ASCT for several years. We are proud to have a co-worker contributing as a member of the Board of Directors for the ASCT. Samuel also serves the ASU community on the Board of Directors for the alumni corporation for the ASU chapter of Acacia Fraternity. Incidentally, the James Webb space telescope (JWST), is named after a fellow Acacian.

Arizona Society For Coatings Technology Mission

The purpose or mission of the Arizona Society For Coatings Technology (ASCT) is to provide practical, scientific, and technical facts and standards fundamental to the development, manufacture, and use of paints, varnishes, lacquers, related protective and decorative coatings, printing inks, and other allied and related industries. Including the collection, dissemination, promotion, investigation and interchange of ideas among ASCT members and the public members to promote research and applications of the sciences in the development of paints, coatings and related materials. Finally, the ASCT seeks to cooperate with other organizations related to the paints and coatings industry.

Arizona Society For Coatings Technology Scholarships

The Arizona Society for Coatings Technology provides scholarship funds through endowments created at the three major universities in Arizona. Scholarships are available through Arizona State University (ASU), University of Arizona (UofA) and Northern Arizona University (NAU) to support the scholarly pursuits of full-time undergraduate juniors and seniors majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry. The coatings industry needs graduates with a strong chemistry foundation, well-prepared students demonstrating outstanding laboratory skills are preferred. Scholarship recipients receive ASCT student membership and are welcome to attend the society meetings during the year and are invited to present on their research studies.

Western Coating Societies (WCS) Mission

The primary mission of the Western Coating Societies (WCS) is to promote education activities and the interchange of ideas among its members and the public and to arrange for the collection and dissemination of information pertinent to the industries served by WCS. The WCS incorporated in 2006 and currently consists of the Arizona Society for Coatings Technology, Golden Gate Society for Coatings Technology, Los Angeles Society for Coatings Technology, and the Pacific Northwest Societies for Coatings Technology.

The WCS is a professional society that serves the people and businesses that manufacture paints, coatings and related materials in the Western United States and Canada. The ASCT and WCS provide educational opportunities for its members and gives back to the coatings scientific community via awards of scholarships to students and academic institutions focused on coatings research and related fields of study in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Polymer Science.
